- USING THE VIEW PROGRAM
-
- To use this disc, merely change drives to your CD-ROM drive, then
- type "VIEW" in the root directory of the CD-ROM drive, then press
- enter. The VIEW program will then display a listing of the
- subdirectories and their description on the disc. Use the cursor
- keys to move the highlight bar up and down the screen. Then press
- ENTER to change into any of the subdirectories. The VIEW program
- will then display a list of files within that particular
- subdirectory. (To return to the subdirectory listing, press the
- ESCAPE key.)
-
- While in the list of files, the VIEW program can let you read a text
- file, uncompress a zipped file, or copy a file onto another drive.
-
- To read a text file, merely position the highlight bar onto the line
- with the filename you wish to read, then press ENTER. While reading
- the document, if you wish to search for a string, press either the
- "S" key, CONTROL-S (type "S" while holding down the Control key), or
- F9 then enter the string you want to search for. To search for the
- string again, merely press the S key, CONTROL-S, or F9 key. You may
- do reverse searches by pressing R, CONTROL-R, or F10 the same way.
-
- To uncompress a zipped file, position the highlight bar onto the line
- with the filename you wish to uncompress, then press ENTER. The
- screen will change to ask you to where you wish to uncompress the
- file, the default being a directory on your C: drive. If you wish,
- you may edit this destination box. Press ENTER to begin
- uncompressing the file, or press ESCAPE to abort. After
- uncompressing, you will have the option to either exit out to the
- directory to which the VIEW program uncompressed the file, or to
- return to the menu. If you decide to return the menu, be sure to
- remember to where you uncompressed the file!
-
- To copy a file, position the highlight bar onto the line you want to
- copy, then press ENTER. The screen will change to ask you to where
- you wish to copy the file. The default place is a directory on your
- C: drive. If you wish, you may edit this destination box. Press
- ENTER to copy the file, or press ESCAPE to abort. After copying, you
- will have the option to either exit out to the directory to which the
- VIEW program copied the file, or to return to the menu. If you
- decide to return the menu, be sure to remember where you copied the
- file!
-
- To view files that are written in Japanese and Chinese, first try to
- position the highlight bar onto the filename that you wish to read
- and press the ENTER key. The VIEW program can recognize most of the
- files in Japanese and Chinese and will display them accordingly. If
- just pressing enter doesn't work, try hitting the following keys for
- the following cases:
-
- J - to view a file in Japanese.
- G - to view a file in Chinese, encoded using the GB standard.
- 5 - to view a file in Chinese, encoded using the BIG5 standard.
-
- You should be able to tell when a text file is written in either
- Japanese or Chinese when the text file contains strings that look
- like:
-
- $B;d$NL>A0$O=);3$G$9!#(B
-
- Please read the following section to get a better idea about how the
- Japanese and Chinese text viewers work.
-
- ===========================================================================
- JReader and CNVIEW
-
- JReader (by Jim Breen) and CNView (by Jifang Lin) allow you to view
- Japanese and Chinese, respectively. We configured the VIEW program
- (described above) to use these two programs to view the Usenet
- articles.
-
- You MAY install JReader and CNVIEW onto your hard drive for faster
- access. To do so, use the following batch files:
-
- J_INST.BAT to install JREADER
- C_INST.BAT to install CNVIEW
-
- The usage is the following:
-
- J_INST <Hard Drive letter:>
- C_INST <Hard Drive letter:>
-
- For example, typing the following at your CDROM prompt and pressing enter:
-
- J_INST C:
-
- will install JReader onto your C drive.
-
- If you find that you need space on your hard drive, or if you wish to
- get rid of one of these viewers, use the following batch files to
- delete them from your hard drive:
-
- J_INST.BAT to uninstall JREADER
- C_INST.BAT to uninstall CNVIEW
- The usage is the following:
-
- J_UNINST <Hard Drive letter:>
- C_UNINST <Hard Drive letter:>
-
- For example, typing the following at your CDROM prompt and pressing enter:
-
- J_UNINST C:
-
- will uninstall JReader from your C drive.
